Final Film

Above is the final film, edited by Alicia. After gaining feedback for the last draft, Alicia and I decided to make a few changes to the film, changing the order of a few shots, and deleting a few, to make it flow better and seem more realistic. Overall, I think Alicia edited it well, and it looks professional.

We decided to move the credits around the screen, so they weren’t statically in the left hand corner of each shot. Also, towards the end we changed James’ writing in the journal shots as we felt three different shots of the same thing was excessive. Furthermore, in the last draft, a short shot was shown where Alicia and Jasmin were visible, which made our film feel less professional, therefore this needed to be cut out. We didn’t need to refilm any shots however, which was fortunate.

Second Opinion on the score

To ensure the piece I had written was playable, I asked a pianist, Mitchell, to try playing it. He allowed us to get a second opinion, and as he is a talented player, helped teach me how to play it.

Picture3.pngMitchell is a year 11, currently studying at the same school as I am. He is grade 8 on piano, and has a great interest in organs, often attending organ meetings and playing in churches. He also accompanies most school music events, and is sitting his GCSE music in June. We thought that getting a second opinion on the piece would be a good idea, as he would pick out bad and good points and acts as a form of judgement to the composition.

He said, “the piece is cute, it would fit a romance well, it reminds me of a cheesy film with a happy ending”, this was positive feedback as it was written for a romance. He made sure the intervals were playable, as one or two were a hard stretch, but after re-voicing them, he described the notation as “simple, yet the leaps between notes make the piece seem much more complex, like two stories, or people weaving together as one”.

After this session with Mitchell, we decided as a group that the piece would fit our genre, and should be played as the non-diegetic soundtrack to our opening sequence. Below is a short clip of Mitchell playing part of the piece.

Second Draft

Above is the link to our final film.

For this, we went to Stansted Mountfitchet station, as we were unable to film at Bishop’s Stortford. The station was a lot quieter, with only one or two other people waiting for a train at a time. We also found filming quite difficult as several trains would race past without stopping, however, after Alicia had edited our film, we were all pleased with the result.

Below is photographic evidence of our filming:

Standard Features of a Romance Film

  • Often a voiceover is used to introduce the love theme
  • Main characters are introduced
  • Aimed at female audience (generally)
  • Usually the characters go their separate ways because of an argument or disagreement but they reunite afterwards
  • Usually involves wedding bells, hearts or flowers all of which symbolise love
  • Often the film directors use other genre elements and integrate them into the romance film
  • A typical romance genre would include sexuality, gender, status and relationships
  • Normally contains emotional feelings
  • ‘boy meets girl’ this is very typical in a romance and also most of the audience watch this type of film to see a happy ending
  • Normally the director will produce a script which would infer to the audience that maybe the characters are a good love match and that it might end happy.

Final Actors

James

As, during the initial filming, Lewis was unable to keep a straight face for a long period of time; we felt he wasn’t right for our role. As a result of this, we decided to use Arriyan, who was not part of our first screen tests, but performed at The Rhodes Centre, a local place which puts on large drama performances, for two years.  He also took media GCSE, and runs a popular Youtube channel.

We chose Ellie as she was enthusiastic when reading lines and has a good look, as well as this she has had some experience. This shows that she is able to be professional when filming etc.
