Props (final)

We decided that for our actual film, we would use four props. A handbag and locket, which will be used by the female character Lucy, and a pen and journal, which will be used by the male character James.

The character Lucy needed a handbag due to the fact that stereotypically most women carry handbags especially those that are businesswomen in London. The locket would add sentimental value, making the audience feel empathetic towards her when she drops it. The use of the locket also makes the gesture of James returning it to Lucy more romantic, and the audience will want them to become romantically involved. People who also own a locket will relate to Lucy, wanting her locket to be returned to her as they know the value it has to them.

Deconstruction of ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind’

As the scene opens there is an over the shoulder shot of a train station. It is very busy, and it is a dark day so the natural lighting creates a dull mood for the scene. There is a voiceover (non-diegetic sound) over the scene, of a male character. Who is seemingly on the train approaching the platform as the shot changes to a point of view shot of a character on the train who is seemi ngly viewing everyone at the platform. There is a suspicious character on the platform dressed in all black who begins running through the crowd of people. He is carrying a brief case.

The scene then changes to the camera ‘dollying’ the running character as he makes his way to the station exit. The voiceover continues, but the audience are still able to hear the diegetic sounds of the scene, for example;

  • Door opening
  • Murmuring of people in background
  • Trains

The character then hastily runs to a different platform and a comedic affect is created as he struggles to enter the train because of the shut doors. The audience then sees the train begin to leave the platform from a high angle, the shot then cuts back to the male characters face as he lets out a sigh. (the voiceover still continuing at this point)

The scene then changes to an emptier station and the voiceover stops. The man seems to be having a phone conversation. It is a long shot of the station which gives the audience the idea that the character is here. There are not many sounds apart from the diegetic sound of one way dialogue (as the audience cannot hear the other side of the phone conversation).

The scene then dramatically changes to a shot at the beach. Using an ecu, and natural lighting which creates a serious tone to the scene.

Overall the film is started with a simple and straightforward set of scenes. The characters are introduced and a relationship between them is shown.
